The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced on Apr. 7 the launch of its new Wheels of Engagement trailer, designed to foster stronger relationships throughout the county.

The initiative aims to increase positive interactions between deputies and residents, especially in smaller and rural communities that may not often participate in larger events. The trailer is equipped with yard games, sports equipment, and interactive activities intended to bring people together. Games can also be played on the exterior of the repurposed vehicle.

Community Services Coordinator Hillary Hidy said, “The Wheels of Engagement trailer allows us to meet people where they are in a fun, approachable way. It creates opportunities for positive, non-enforcement interactions that help break down barriers, build trust, and reinforce that deputies are here not only to protect, but to support and connect with the community.”

Previously used by the Emergency Management Division for supply storage, the older trailer was transformed with a new wrap designed and installed by Kansas City North Signarama. The Community Engagement Unit began efforts last December with free holiday meal distribution in partnership with Hy-Vee; this new program is their next step toward outreach.

Public Relations Manager Sarah Boyd said, “We have dozens of community events annually, but a lot of those are in our bigger population centers. Residents of our smaller and more rural communities may not be able to make it to those, so we wanted a way to take the fun to them.”

According to Hidy: “We hope this initiative strengthens relationships across all communities in Clay County by creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable engaging with our deputies. By engaging youth and families through games, activities, and conversations, we can foster trust, improve communication, and build lasting relationships.”

The Wheels of Engagement trailer will appear at various public events across Clay County; event details will be posted on the Sheriff’s Office website.
