Thank you for the questions concerning weather alerts and outdoor warning sirens. Let’s take this time to work on a few of the common questions we are receiving. Two most common questions:
WHY didn’t I hear the outdoor warning siren?
• If you are inside the outdoor weather siren isn’t designed to alert you. The outdoor warning siren is designed to alert persons who are outside and not near a phone, television, or radio. The understanding is that while you are indoors you will have an alert system appropriate for you to hear.
WHERE or WHO sounds the outdoor warning siren in my area?
• If you live in a city limit then that city is responsible for the outdoor warning siren
• If you live in the county in a rural or unincorporated location, then the county is responsible for the outdoor warning siren
- If you live in Kansas City, you will hear outdoor warning sirens from the KCMO office of Emergency Management. You may live in Clay County but are in the city of Kansas City.
- If you are enjoying a camping trip at Smithville Lake and hear outdoor warning sirens, those are being alerted by Clay County Sheriff's Office communications.
