Cardinals, Drury Trade Shutouts in Split

OZARK, Mo. - It was a tale of two games on Friday afternoon as the William Jewell baseball team traveled to Drury where they split a doubleheader, falling 17-0 in the opener before responding for a 19-0 win in game two. The Cardinals move to 14-5 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. 

Game 1 (Jewell 0, Drury 17)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Drury took an early lead, scoring four runs before the Cardinals were able to record an out and added two more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. 
  • The Panthers added five in the third inning, two in the fourth and four more in the sixth to end the game early. 
KEY STATS

  • The Cardinals had four hits by four different players. 
  • Six pitchers appeared in the game for Jewell as the starter Jake Sawyer (2-1) took the loss. The staff allowed 16 earned runs while walking 12 and striking out three. 
Game 2 (Jewell 19, Drury 0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The offense came to life in the nightcap as Will Brant doubled in the first inning to score Jordan Phillips and Cole Conner for the early 2-0 lead. 
  • Jewell added one run in each of the second and third inning and two more in the fourth to push their lead to 6-0. 
  • In the fifth frame, Dawson Tweet doubled followed by a walk to Brant before Phillips sent a three-run home run to right center. 
  • The Cardinals continued to pile it on, scoring four in the sixth on two-RBI doubles from Brant and Alex Epp before scoring four more in the seventh to bring the score to the final of 19-0.
KEY STATS

  • Chandler Ashby was again masterful on the mound, tossing a his second complete game shutout in as many outings. The redshirt sophomore allowed just three hits and four walks on the day, while striking out nine.
  • The Cardinals scored in every inning of game two, including plating 8-of-19 runs with two outs.
  • Jewell pounded out 20 hits, led by Phillips who went 3-for-5 with six RBI and five runs scored.
  • Epp added four hits, three RBI and two RBI while Brant drove in five.
