Liberty Hospital has introduced several new technologies and procedures aimed at improving care for patients with heart and lung conditions.
The hospital recently began offering Pulsed Field Ablation, a treatment for atrial fibrillation that uses short electrical pulses to ablate tissue. According to the hospital, this method allows for more precise targeting and reduces both procedure time and the risk of unintended damage compared to older techniques like radio frequency ablation and cryoablation. Siva Soma, MD, and Yeruva Reddy, MD, from The University of Kansas Health System have been performing this procedure with the Liberty Hospital surgical team since early August.
For lung care, Liberty Hospital now provides Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy. This minimally invasive technology uses a robotic-assisted platform to biopsy lung tissue, which can help speed up the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. While other hospitals in the Kansas City area have Ion systems, Liberty Hospital is noted as being the northernmost facility in the region with this technology, increasing access for patients in nearby communities.
Additionally, Liberty Hospital has implemented an AI-powered emphysema screening program that reviews chest CT scans to identify patients who may benefit from Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR). This procedure involves placing endobronchial valves—small umbrella-shaped devices—in airways to redirect airflow from diseased parts of the lung to healthier areas.
For further information about these cardiac or pulmonary procedures, individuals are encouraged to contact either the Liberty Hospital Heart Center or Pulmonary and Sleep Clinic.
